It’s your executive here with a long overdue SRC report. Here is an update on what’s been going on with your representative council.

The theme and dates for the annual GSMS Winter/Spring Carnival have been set! This year the Carnival will take on the theme of…… wait for it…… HARRY POTTER! It will begin with the sorting of the houses on Wednesday, March 24th and will be wrapped up on the 26th. The activities will remain a secret until closer to the event but I can assure you that this will be the most exciting, the most energetic and the most hilarious carnival yet!

You all obviously know of the disaster that struck Haiti over a month ago. Most of you have also probably heard of the benefit concert that GSMS is putting on Thursday, February 25th. The SRC would like to do its part for Haitians and we will be selling our George Street Going Green Bags at the concert for $3 each with all profits going to Haiti. Remember that the concert doors open at 6:30 pm, and there is a minimum $5 donation at the door. Come and enjoy music put on by GSMS students, alumni and other bands while knowing the whole time that you are helping a country in need.

That’s all for this report and don’t forget to check out the GSMS web site for information on our Twitti School project and other great things that are going on at our school.

Enjoy the concert!
Until next time,
Your VP,
Daniel Luton

L. This is your SRC executive here to give you an update on the SRC news.

SRC is active at George Street to raise money and sponsor student activities and of course, to spread school spirit around! So far this fall we have run the Perfection Campaign (it made over $8,500 in profit!), organized a dance and planned for the year. At our recent meeting, we were preparing our budget for the year.

To date the council has voted on giving:
-$750 to the Yearbook Committee for the purchase of a new laptop.
-$1,170 to Mr. Plourde to purchase student of the month medals for the next four years.
-$800 to buy turkeys for each class for the “George Cares, George Shares” programme.

Also, we are starting to discuss possible themes for this year’s Winter/Spring Carnival. Nothing is finalized so not even the SRC knows what the plan is yet but no matter what it is, it will be great! We were also talking about raising money for the Twitti School in Zambia, Africa
(A school that GSMS is helping to build). So far this year, we have raised $323.27 for Twitti and that’s just through the “Keep the Change” programme. Keep donating your extra pennies and nickels George Street because every bit helps! We are also forming a Twitti Committee from class reps who will plan and organize all of the activities that have to do with fundraising for the Twitti School (ex. PJ/crazy hat & hair days, sock hops etc.).

Until next time,
Your V-P,
Daniel Luton

L. Every donation is very appreciated and helps our friends in Zambia. Also a thank you goes out to all the students and teachers who volunteer their time to do the fundraising.

One of our newest fundraisers and wonderful ways of being green is our new Green Bags! They are reusable bags that say “George Street Middle School, Going Green”. They are the wonderful colors of our school, purple and gold and only cost 3, 00$! Our Green Bags our great for carrying light weight amounts. Some examples are: gym clothes, use as a purse, groceries etc. Make sure that you don’t stuff the bags full, they can break.

In the next few days SRC reps from each house will be going around to the classes to tell students about Purple and Gold G’s. A Gold G is for students who have been involved in 3 or more different school activities during this year. Even if you have done three activities, you may not get a Gold G because you participated less than required. So be very accurate! A Purple G is for students who have participated in A LOT of school activities and stand out among students. The reps will be giving more details as they go to the classes and can answer any questions you may have. The reps will also be asking you to tell them the activities you have been in that year, so you can apply for the award. If you have been in less than three, you cannot receive the award. Be sure to be very accurate on how much you participated in each activity because it will matter on the result of if you get the award or not.

This Friday June 5th 2009, there will be a sock hop for each grade during their options. This sock hop will be to fundraise for the Twitti School. It will cost 50¢ to get into the sock hop, hope you all will come!

Until next time,
Your V-P,
Madison Dixon J

L. It was a great success and the theme was George goes to Hollywood! The students competed in many events, such as an ice cream eating contest, an obstacle course to be done completely in high heels, a dodgeball tournament, a tug-o-war competition, a door decorating contest, and so on. For a final assembly we held the first annual George goes to the Oscars! There were two Oscars being presented, one for the best Billboard Door in our door decorating contest, and the other was for the Best Motion Picture Oscar; in other words, the winning class. 7H took home the Oscar for the best Billboard Door, but in the end it was 7B that took home the Best Motion Picture Oscar. For all of their hard work, 7B was rewarded a pizza party!

Now on to our latest fundraiser, the George Street Middle School Going Green bags! These are gold and purple bags (our school colours), with a tree on them. On top of the tree it reads "GOING GREEN" to represent that we as a school have come together to do our part for the environment. They are made of partly recycled material, and may be purchased for $3.00 a bag.

L. A decision has been made on the theme. It is…oh wait, I can’t tell you! It is a surprise but you will find out soon and it will be a blast! We have decided that we are going to continue the "keep the change" fund-raiser because every little bit of money counts; even your pennies! A few things that we have been giving money to in the past little while are:
Our band so they can buy some new instruments
$200.00 to each house for student activities
Funds to Spark so we can continue having so many awesome choices to pick from
Turkeys before Christmas to help feed those in need
Money for the positive pool party tripThe SRC has also been talking about what the theme will be for this year’s winter/spring carnival. The house reps have gone around and asked the classes if they had any ideas for themes and those ideas will be considered and talked about at our next SRC meeting. This year’s carnival is sure to be a great success!Thank you to everyone who has been donating money to our Twitti School fund raisers. The Twitti school in Zambia

The staff and students of GSMS are once again helping Friends for Zambia build a much needed school for their community, The Twitti School. Former teachers from the Fredericton/Oromocto area are heading up this special project and the students of GSMS are very proud to help out. Last year, we donated a little over $2000 to help and this year we are off to a great start.

We had our first dress up day on Thursday November 28 in which students paid a loonie to wear their PJ's to school. Around 300$ was collected on this day. Students are now planning a red/green day on the last day of school with the same idea.

On going is a "spare change" campaign in which students donate their spare change such as dimes, nickles and pennies to our Funds for Twitti School. We hope that over the year, we can collect lots of spare change for this school.

To find out more about the Twitti School please visit: www.friendsforzambia.org. On the website you will meet the teachers who are making this school possible, updates on the building of the school as well as any other information needed. The good news is that 100% of the money raised goes directly to the school.
